The airport is 10 kilometres west from the City of Calgary, just north of Highway 1, in the Municipal District of Rocky View No. 44. Its site occupies approximately 420 hectares (1040 acres). The airport is surrounded by relatively flat, agricultural land that slopes gradually northward towards the Bow River. Springbank is conveniently located with respect to the suburban area of
Calgary and small towns like Cochrane and Bragg Creek.
The Springbank Airport is a Local Commercial (Satellite) Sub Class V airport in the Transport Canada rating system and is a reliever to the Calgary International Airport. It provides a base for both private and commercial light aircraft operations including pilot training, charter services and recreational flying. The major tenants provide services to these operations that include fuel sales, flight training, aircraft maintenance, aircraft parking and hangar storage space.
The majority of the aviation activity is associated with flight training and this activity accounts for about 80% of the total aircraft movements at Springbank. However, the favourable economic climate in the Calgary area has resulted in a significant increase in recreational flying at Springbank.
